Mexico raises concerns over Georgia illegal immigration bill
Atlanta’s Mexican Consulate is expressing concerns over the “potentially grave effects” pending legislation targeting illegal immigration could have on Mexican nationals here.
In a statement released Friday, the consulate singled out House Bill 87, which passed Georgia’s House on Thursday. Among other things, HB 87 would authorize state and local police to verify the immigration status of certain suspects. Lakewood Man Gets 4 Years in Federal Prison for Harboring Undocumented Immigrants

Bills Modeled After Arizona’s SB 1070 Spread Through States
UPDATE @ 6:55 ET: North Carolina just became the 16th state* to introduce an SB 1070 copycat bill. Unlike Arizona’s law, the North Carolina bill states that only a “law enforcement officer who is authorized by the federal government to verify or ascertain a person’s immigration status” may enforce the new law. The effect, as I discuss below in the context of other states, is a blurring of the lines between state and federal immigration enforcement programs.

In Arizona’s state legislature, racial profiling is so 2010. It introduced a set of anti-immigrant bills last week that make last year’s SB 1070 look a bit like a passing nuisance. But outside the Grand Canyon State, SB 1070 is far from last year’s news. A round of similarly crafted and in many cases more extreme bills are now spreading all over the country.

Time to protect American children from illegal alien identity theft
Illegal alien driven, employment-related identity theft is destroying the good names and futures of literally millions of innocent American children, while current federal identity theft law and the IRS and Social Security Administration sit on the sidelines as the number of victims continues to grow.
According to the Social Security Administration, an estimated 75 percent of illegal aliens use fraudulently obtained Social Security numbers to pay payroll taxes. In Utah, employment related identity theft accounts for 16 percent of all reported identity theft according to the Federal Trade Commission.
Based on investigations conducted by Workforce Services and the Utah Attorney General's office, it is estimated that 50,000 Utah children have their identities being used primarily by illegal aliens to get jobs. In 2006, 1,626 employers were found to be paying wages to the Social Security numbers of Utah children under age 13. Anti-matricula bill clears House panel
DURHAM -- A bill that would stop police in Durham and other communities from recognizing identification cards like the Mexican matricula consular cleared its first hurdle in the General Assembly on Thursday.
The N.C. House's Government Committee endorsed the bill by a 16-10 vote, sending it on to the chamber's Judiciary Committee for additional review, City Councilman Mike Woodard said.
Woodard, who attended the morning hearing at the request of El Centro Hispano organizer Ronald Garcia-Fogarty, said the vote followed party lines.
He reported to his City Council colleagues Thursday afternoon that Durham legislators are pessimistic about the chances of stopping the bill.
"I got pretty grim predictions from [Paul] Luebke and [Mickey] Michaux," Woodard said, naming the Democrats who head Durham's House delegation.
Thursday's committee vote came 22 days after the chamber's lone independent joined an otherwise GOP-only group of House members in introducing the bill.
It would allow police, judges, magistrates and other officials in the criminal-justice system to accept as confirmation of a person's identity only a state driver's license, a state ID card, a passport or official U.S. immigration papers...

Traffic stop prompts call to immigration authorities: Brecksville Police Blotter

SUSPICIOUS CHARACTERS, I-77: A pair of Hispanic males were detained by Brecksville police following a routine traffic stop on Interstate 77 Feb. 16.
The pair were riding in a blue Ford pickup truck that lacked a properly visible rear license plate. The driver, in broken English, explained that he bought the truck in Nevada. He provided documentation of the purchase and the salvage title. The tag however, was only good to transport the truck from Nevada to Illinois.
The man’s license indicated that he was 31-year-old resident of Washington. The passenger had a library card but gave a birth date indicating that he was 29.
When questioned about his easterly detour from Illinois, the driver said he owned a painting company and was picking up some tools from an Independence hotel and was transferring them to a job in Michigan.
He told officers that there was nothing illegal in the truck and consented to a search. Officers found several forms of identification with photos of both the driver and passenger but with different Social Security numbers and from different states.
The men were taken to the station until their proper identification could be determined. Police spoke with a Cleveland Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent who spoke with the men. She determined that the men were undocumented aliens and in the country illegally. She requested that they be held pending further investigation and arranged to transport them Feb. 17...
