Charleston suburb moves to ban illegal immigrants from town

SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - The Summerville Town Council Wednesday night approved the first reading of a controversial ordinance that would require landlords to verify a tenant's legal status before renting to them.

The town council voted 4-2 in support of the measure first proposed by council member Walter Bailey.

The measure, if it passes the Council, would affect nearly every landlord-tenant agreement in Summerville. Bailey's ordinance would make it illegal for landlords or property owners to rent to illegal immigrants. Violators of the ordinance would have to pay a $100 fine for each offense...

Illegal Aliens Sentenced In IRS Fraud Case

SPARTANBURG, S.C. --

Two – of 10 – defendants in an IRS fraud case were sentenced Monday, according to the US Attorney’s Office.

The case involved tax preparers in Spartanburg, Forest City, N.C., and Bolings Springs, S.C.

The businesses, according to the release, are Seguros Internacionales and Poz Servicios Para Hispanos.

The two preparers filed more than 10,000 income tax returns claiming more than $22 million in refunds. The IRS paid out about $13 million in refunds before they realized the returns were frauds.

At least 20 people were involved in the fraud, a release states.
