Tax Credit Bill Contains Loophole for Illegal Immigrants

Gov. Martin O'Malley's proposal to give a tax credit to businesses for hiring unemployed Maryland residents could benefit illegal immigrants, according to several anti-illegal-immigration groups.

"I'm concerned we're going to be creating 6,700 jobs and they are going to go to people who have absolutely no right to those jobs," said Sue Payne, president of Citizens Above Party, which opposes illegal immigration.

Rep. Kenny Marchant Proposes Bill to use E-Verify for Mortgage Applications

Rep. Kenny Marchant (R-Texas) has offered the Mortgage E-Verify Act that would require a mortgagor to be verified through E-Verify when applying for a modification of a home loan owned by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac.

"As a member of the House Financial Services Committee, I am happy to introduce my bill, the Mortgage E-Verify Act, which would require, as a condition for modification of a home mortgage loan held by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac or insured by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA), that the mortgagor be verified under the E-Verify program," Rep. Marchant said in a press release. "My bill will potentially save millions by cutting down on fraudulent claims from illegal immigrants and protect taxpayers from subsidizing the restructuring or renegotiation mortgages of illegal immigrants."...

Day Laborers Sue Over Right to Solicit Work on the Street

In the latest of many bold legal actions taken by illegal immigrants against local governments nationwide, a group of undocumented day laborers are suing a southern California city for banning them from seeking work on public streets.

Houston Bus Companies Were Links In Illegal Immigrant Network

HOUSTON — Raids on 14 illegal bus companies here have shed light on a seedy underground system that transported illegal immigrants all over the country and that sometimes held them captive until their relatives paid exorbitant fares, federal law enforcement officials said Thursday.

Using minivans, the companies were carrying hundreds of illegal immigrants from Mexico to cities across the United States, taking back roads and traveling primarily at night to avoid the authorities, according to criminal complaints filed in Federal District Court. Twenty-two people were arrested earlier this week on charges of using their businesses to transport illegal immigrants...

In 2008 a similar bill was passed through committee and the Senate in one day, so we have a real chance to get these passed this time.

SENATE BILL 35 sponosred by Senators Bill Seitz (R - Cincinnati) and Jimmy Stewart (R - Albany) would mandate that the Ohio Attorney General pursue a memorandum of agreement with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement to deputize Ohio law enforcement officers as immigration enforcement officers. This would provide for the enforcement of both criminal and civil violations of immigration law. This memorandum agreement is commonly referred to as a 287(g) program.

SENATE BILL 150 sponsored by Senator Gary Cates (R-West Chester), would provide that a board of county commissioners may direct a sheriff to take custody of persons who are being detained for deportation or who are charged with criminal violations of immigration law and to expressly authorize state and local employees and county sheriffs to render assistance to federal immigration officials in the investigation and enforcement of federal immigration law. Senate Bill 150 is a reintroduction of the last general assembly's Senate Bill 260, which contained the same provisions. The bill text is currently in the Senate State and Local Government and Veterans Affairs Committee.
