Increased innovation, a crackdown on piracy, and H-1B visas? Good. Taxes on tech companies, Net neutrality legislation, and our country's current patent system? Bad. Republican presidential hopeful John McCain on Thursday unveiled his technology policy statement. It did not stray far from his already established positions on major tech issues like Net neutrality, patent protection and piracy, broadband availability, privacy, and the availability of H1B visas, but focused mainly on increased innovation, intellectual property protection, and preserving technology through market forces. Net neutrality is "prescriptive regulation" in which McCain does not believe, according to the ...

Two national lawmakers, Hazleton’s mayor, a police chief and the public are inquiring into the release of nine illegal immigrants from police custody in Beaver Meadows in late July. Beaver Meadows Chief Michael Morresi said he wasn’t pleased with the way the situation was handled. Not only does he believe that federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials didn’t do all they could have — he said a statement regarding the incident from ICE to a federal lawmaker’s staff was misleading. “We’re getting a lot of calls from concerned people,” Morresi said, referring to public response to an incident that began with a routine traffic stop on the ...

Crackdown on Smugglers Needed, Chertoff Says By RANDAL C. ARCHIBOLD Published: August 15, 2008 LOS ANGELES – The rising tide of guns flowing into Mexico from the United States, which is fueling some of the worst drug violence there in years, can only be stopped by cracking down on smugglers the way federal authorities hobbled the mafia, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Thursday. Mr. Chertoff gave that assessment in an interview as he attended a conference here of governors from United States and Mexican border states that concludes on Friday. With thousands killed in Mexico in the past year as drug cartels battle for turf and supremacy, security along the border ...

North Carolina's community colleges will continue to be closed to illegal immigrants for the time being. The State Board of Community Colleges voted Friday to maintain its current policy that forbids staff from admitting students who are in the country illegally. The policy is the most restrictive in the country. Lt. Gov Beverly Perdue asked fellow board members to uphold the policy as officials study and draft a more permanent policy. The policy was adopted in May as Attorney General Roy Cooper sought guidance on whether admitting illegal immigrants violated federal law. In response, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said the issue fell to the states.

Illegal Alien Employer Wants $5 Billion More Taxpayer Dollars By Greg L 13 August 2008 WTOP is reporting on the arrest by the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement of 42 illegal aliens reporting to their jobs working within the sensitive areas of Dulles International Airport. This follows on the heels of the arrest of 18 illegal aliens inside Quantico Marine Corps Base in January of 2007, and the arrest of fifty more illegal aliens working on the construction of a federal courthouse in Richmond on May of this year, which really raises the question of whether our federal government itself has much interest at all in being a responsible employer. Between the Federal Aviation ...
