Public safety: Pinal sheriff heads to D.C., stresses border security to Congress

On an invitation from Sen. John McCain, Pinal County sheriff Paul Babeu spoke in front of Congress last week and discussed current border security with the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security.

“I think that this year, even though the debate has been heated, I believe this is our best chance to secure the border,” Babeu said.

He indicated that there was bi-partisan support from the committee and estimates some sort of immigration reform could be approved by the end of the year.

“It was a great opportunity,” Babeu said. “(The testimony) was received very well. I couldn’t have been prouder of our senator John McCain; he stood for Arizona and represented us very well.”

He said he and McCain submitted a number of first-hand accounts from Arizona residents who live near drug cartel hideouts and the crimes that have resulted from illegal immigration. He said he also cited crime statistics related to cartels and illegal immigrants.

Babeu said he wanted to make it clear to the committee (and others) is that Mexico is not the enemy of the U.S., but to the drug cartels instead.

“What we need is a secure border,” he said...[Full Article]

Accused child rapist wants deportation: kasa.com

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KRQE) - Three small children said he raped them, but that man may never face charges for any of it. News 13 has learned the illegal immigrant may be incompetent to stand trial. Gonzalez was 13 when he told investigators he raped a little boy and a little girl. Then last year the 20-year-old admitted to raping another child inside a popular Albuquerque gym. A terrified 6-year-old girl attacked inside the playroom at the Midtown Sports and Wellness.

“He held hand over his mouth so she couldn't scream,” Albuquerque Police Deputy Chief Beth Paiz said in May when Gonzalez was arrested. ”He could hear the child say stop, stop, stop.”

Gonzalez's criminal case for rape is at a standstill...[Full Article]

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Amendment was for former slaves, not illegals

Washington Times

James C. Ho’s recent commentary article, “Ban on birthright citizenship unconstitutional” (Monday) ignores the facts about the 14th Amendment.

Congress can and should end birth citizenship. First, the Constitution expressly gives Congress the power to decide national immigration policies. Section 5 of the 14th Amendment explicitly delegates to Congress the right to legislate how the provisions of the amendment are to be applied...[Full Article]
