The Cost Of Educating The Children Of Illegal Aliens: Exorbitent

A new study prepared for The Social Contract Press entitled “The Burden of Plyler v. Doe,” by economic journalist Edwin S. Rubenstein highlights the financial burden imposed on public education by the U.S. Supreme Court decision Plyler v. Doe (1982). In that landmark case, the justices on the Supreme Court “struck down a Texas statute denying funding for education” of children illegally in the United States.

Of course, all other 49 states were bound by this decision. Because funding for education is the largest expense incurred by local and state governments on behalf of illegal immigrants (far more than healthcare, welfare, etc.), Rubenstein sought to calculate the burden.

And what a burden it is!

Using data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau and gleaning material from other studies, the author estimates the cost of educating the children of illegal aliens in this country to be as high as $137 billion annually. This figure includes basic instruction, English-as-a-second-language programs (which, he points out, are a boondoggle), and capital expenditures (e.g. construction costs)...

More Laws Have Been Enacted To Help Immigrants Than Restrict Them

Despite recent national attention on such laws as the Arizona measure aimed at cracking down on illegal immigrants, a study released Monday by the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars shows that across the country, more laws expanding immigrants' rights are enacted than those contracting them.

The study, "Context Matters: Latino Immigrant Civic Engagement in Nine U.S. Cities," found that areas long accustomed to an influx of immigrants, including close-in jurisdictions of the Washington region, tend to focus more on trying to accommodate them rather than restrict them...

Michigan Lawmaker Plans Arizona-Like Immigration Bill

LANSING -- A Michigan lawmaker believes the state's law enforcement officers need the authority to arrest illegal immigrants and is drafting legislation similar to Arizona's new immigration law.

Rep. Kim Meltzer, R-Clinton Township, said her bill would allow police to request proof of citizenship from people who are stopped and questioned on another offense, such as a traffic violation or selling fraudulent identity documents. Officers would have the authority to arrest people who can't prove their legal status.

"We have borders in place for a reason," Meltzer said. "Everyone should play by the rules."...

New Congressional Caucus Emphasizes Link Between Illegal Immigration And Unemployment

While the Obama administration’s approach to dealing with America’s high unemployment level is to spend billions of borrowed dollars to try to create new jobs (without even making sure they are reserved for American workers), a new congressional caucus has a different idea. The Reclaim American Jobs Caucus, formed in March, is seeking to enforce U.S. immigration laws and fill millions of jobs now held by illegal aliens with unemployed American workers.

The bipartisan caucus was founded by Representatives Lamar Smith (R-Tex.), Sue Myrick (R-N.C.) and Gary Miller (R-Calif.) and has 41 members. "If the immigration laws we have on the books were enforced, we could cut unemployment in half," Smith asserted in announcing the formation of the caucus. Miller noted that in his home state some 2.2 million Californians are out of work, while about 1.9 million illegal aliens hold jobs in the state...

On Illegal Immigration And SB 1070

“America must be kept American. For this purpose, it is necessary to continue a policy of restricted immigration.” – President Calvin Coolidge, First Message to Congress, 1923

Citizens who help illegal aliens are considered to be criminals and illegal immigration is a felony, with a possible punishment of up to two years in prison. If an illegal immigrant is deported and tries to enter the country again, he can be jailed for up to ten years. Delinquent visas are punishable with six-year prison terms. The law dictates that all law enforcement, including local, regional, and federal police departments, cooperate with immigration authorities regarding the capture and arrest of illegal immigrants...

IRS Identity Theft

A recent report by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) estimated that 1.2 million tax returns filed in 2007 reported wages earned by an individual using another taxpayer's Social Security number.

Individuals filed these returns using their own Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITIN) but worked using another individuals Social Security number and/or their name. ITINs are used to provide tax identification numbers to resident and nonresident alien individuals who are required to report tax obligations but do not qualify for Social Security numbers. The issuance of an ITIN number does not change their immigration status, entitle them to work or receive Social Security benefits.

Approximately 3 million ITIN tax returns were filed in 2007 and of those filed 40 percent (1.2 million) reported wages earned using another individuals Social Security number (this frequently occurs with illegal immigrants)...

NUGENT: Immigration Lesson For Numskulls
